Tuesday 16 Feb saw the first of my eggs hatch hopefully by the weekend I will have almost all of my first round hatched. I had a pair of birds in box 3 and when I went into the loft on Tuesday their eggs were lying on the floor. (I am using a deep layer of wood shavings (Large) topped with Hay) Both eggs were cold. I decided to put them back in the nest and put the cock beside them. He immediately went to nest. On going to the loft on Wednesday the same eggs were lying outside the nest cold: I duly put them in the nest and put the hen in and she covered the eggs so I left her with them. On visiting the loft on Friday at 8am, I was shocked to see  an egg shell on the hay. On looking at the hen and as I approached her, she stood up and to my amazement there was this fluffy little baby pigeon chick in the nest. I did not move her so cannot tell you if the second egg hatched or not but will be watching. I must name this one Houdini as he was the greatest escape artist ever. The second...

  • Kingslea One Loft Race 2009

This is the second year of the race and it is growing; at the inception I thought I would only have one syndicate but I had three this year. With a total pay out of £6.600 this being a pleasant surprise. Invitation The free barbecue at Kingslea on 30th May from 2 till 5pm for fanciers who entered the Kingslea One Loft Race could come to see the draw for each of the birds; which took place at 3.30 with all the birds on view prior to the draw.  I had so many applicants that I had to make up 3 syndicates; one for Aberdeen federation members and the other for North of Scotland and other fanciers who wished to take part. There was also a charity syndicate where you could pay for a pigeon and nominate your charity of your choice. So the 40 birds offered were £60.00 which would raise £2,400 for charity, Fanciers present at the barbecue drew the birds for each syndicate. Special Raffle Prize I secured a young bird from Royal Lofts, Premier Lofts and Adam Freeman...

  • SNFC YB National 2009

As per last year I sent birds to the Scottish National Flying Club Young bird race from Leicester which is 318 miles to my loft in Aberdeen.   This year 5 were sent: Su 09 AB 2142 SU 09 AB 2109 SU 09 AB 2153 SU 09 AB 2107 SU 09 AB 2117   The birds were liberated into a Westerly wind at 10am which is quite late for young birds having to fly 318 miles. But like last year there is always some birds that make it on the day and I was lucky enough to get SU 09 AB 2142 which was the bird we expected. She was pooled in the Aberdeen Federation pools and the Section and has scooped £580. I think the Kingslea One Loft Race has done me a world of good and the racing the birds get gives them the experience to compete successfully in the big races. Thanks to all who entered the Kingslea One Loft Race for 2009, well done to all the winners. Cheques have been sent to the winners and I look forward to your entry for 2010. Bookings are now being taken for 2010. All 5 birds made it home a...
